This paper discusses the role played by natures ecosystems and why this is of intangible value. ECOSYSTEMS When trying to place a monetary value on an area or source of nature, one would be very hard-pressed to come up with a true value. The very essence of an ecosystems intrinsic value is far too interrelated with other systems to be able to define set boundaries. An ecosystem makes up so many pieces of different puzzles that it would be foolhardy to try to give it a contingent valuation. An ecosystem relates to the food chain in so many different ways that if even one link in that chain were broken one would be hard pressed to assess the value of the damage that might occur. Ecosystems supply not only nature but also man in many different ways, and each way has its own different type of valuation. The aesthetic value of a natural area is but one aspect that cannot be monetarily estimated. What would one pay to have a view of the Grand Canyon, for instance? What is it worth to be able to look out on the waves crashing upon rocks on the shoreline? Nobody can place a value on this for it is an intangible joy, a gift that cannot be purchased.
