in combat. Despite the fact that todays armed forces are highly technological, it is still the soldier in the field who is charged with the task of carrying out the
mission. (Current advertisements on TV talk about the Navy trying to "unman the front lines," but one might wonder if thats a good idea. If no risk is involved, what
incentive is there not to wage war?) At any rate, cruise missiles, "smart" bombs, GPS systems and all the rest can only do so much. At some point, the troops
are going to have to get out of their armored vehicles and engage in the messy, disgusting and dirty business of combat. Because this is a life-or-death situation, the individual
must be aware of where he is and whats happening at all times. The battlefield is an incredibly noisy, chaotic place. And as America learned in Vietnam, when it is
exotic and strange, it is doubly dangerous. In the jungles of Southeast Asia, it was impossible to tell friend from foe. But the real enemy was the climate: the heat
and dampness proved to be an even more terrible enemy than the Viet Cong. Today we have troops in another hostile area, the Middle East. There, heat can prostrate troops
while sand gets into equipment and supplies. While they are distracted, either by illness or by the necessity of trying to repair crippled equipment, they are vulnerable. This is where
