like Jackson should be called kings perhaps. On the other hand, the title must be deserved to be authentic. Interestingly, the story that is behind the title is not really
something unusual. It is not as if fans started calling him "king" and the name stuck. Rather, the King of Pop title is contrived. Jones & Brown (2005) explain
it by including a first hand account of what actually happened: "I put the words in the speech for Quincy to refer to Michael as the King of Pop-a title
I bestowed upon him because Michael had wanted a moniker like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra and Elvis. In fact, I was the one who got Liz Taylor to introduce him
at the Soul Train awards in 1989 as the King of Pop, Rock and Soul. Anyway, on this particular night, Quincy read my ghost-written speech, but left out the King
of pop part. Michael was furious" (49). One can then say that Michael, at least according to this story, is the self-proclaimed King of Pop. He wanted the title. There
are musicians who are dubbed one thing or another by fans, and then, as in the Michael Jackson case, there are those that want some sort of title. Other times,
titles are provided largely by publicists. Having a title is of course a way to draw attention to an individual. While it may be the case that Michael wanted the
