not the least of which is that which relates to women not willing to tell about being abused, or men in some situations. One author indicates, "They fear that confiding
about the abuse may lead to further violence and are concerned about mandatory reporting requirements that could greatly affect a custody case" (Murphy; Ouimet, 2008; 309). Or in some cases
people do not really know they are being abused, or are the abusers (Miller, 2007; A-33). With these realities in mind the following paper examines some of the reasons why
men hit women. Why Men Hit Women From one perspective men hit women to gain control, or feel they are gaining
some level of control: "Domestic violence refers to abusive behavior in an intimate relationship, often aimed at gaining power or control over a partner" (Milano, 2008; 42). In relationship to
this need for power and control one will find such a foundation across all lines in society as the men "are from all ethnic, socioeconomic and educational groups" (Milano, 2008;
42). There are many reasons why a man would desire such a feeling of power and control. Perhaps they have had some bad experiences at work and feel they have
no control in the outside world and need to feel power at home. Perhaps they desire the power because they were abused as a child and had no power as
a child. Another perspective involves the notion of jealousy which is something that became all but expected in American society over a
century ago. It was seen as "an instinctive masculine jealousy bound to love and home" and was somehow actually supported in society as it related to men protecting their home
