grandparents has grown up in, for example. Since the Great Depression, government programs have been created, inclusive of but not limited to unemployment insurance and new rules to assure that
workers rights are protected. Further, while one may argue that unions are necessary-and there are good points to that end-the reality is that unions seem to be less and less
relevant as the years unfold. The point of the union is that people of like mind band together in order to render a fair and safe workplace. They
help one another as there is strength in numbers. One would think it easy to effect change. After all, there are laws against certain labor practices. However, it helps to
keep in mind that those laws would only arise after labor unions were formed. In other words, without the labor unions there would be no overtime laws or minimum wage
laws. That said, with the present state attached to these types of laws, is there still a need for unions? Prior to the time that these laws
were created, people toiled for perhaps sixteen hours per day only to earn a pittance. Unions were needed at the time, but it does not appear that they are needed
today. In general, the workers who lived in the 1800s and early 1900s felt that they were being treated unfairly. In some cases, working conditions were so poor that the
lives of the workers were in danger. The Triangle Factory Fire is a well-known incident where many people died because workers were found in unsafe conditions. At the Triangle
