Essay / Research Paper Abstract
3 pages in length. Begley et al (1999) point out that while some people may be more biologically predisposed to violence, this tendency can be either lessened or amplified by the way in which the child is raised. The presence of such elements as abuse, guns, drugs/alcohol or inadequate parenting - according to the authors - is enough to tip some biologically inclined youth over the edge toward murderous behavior. With chemical imbalance and frontal lobe lesions two of the most applicable aspects of biological predisposition toward excessive violence, the authors point out how these already unstable individuals do not need much in the way of motivation to carry out what other people would never have the wherewithal to do. The inherent lack of emotional sensitivity is the key indicator of mental imbalance, whereby children and/or youth are devoid of the otherwise normal understanding that what they have done - or will do - is wrong. "These are also the adolescents who do not respond to punishment: nothing hurts. Their ability to feel, to react, has died, and so has their conscience. Hostile, impulsive aggressors usually
feel sorry afterward. Antisocial aggressors dont feel at all. Paradoxically, though, they often have a keen sense of injustices aimed at themselves" (Begley, et al, 1999). Nurturing violent behavior,
according to Begley et al (1999) occurs when such aspects as bad parenting, guns and bullying are present. Latch-key kids, single- and no-parent families, emotionally absent parents, working parents
- all these situations contribute to the lack of a childs moral and ethical education. The authors point out that if there is no role model, no basis of
right versus wrong, the child has no guidance as to what is acceptable social behavior. Childhood bullying is often a precursor to a
vicious cycle of adolescent and adult violence. Those who instigate the bullying are sometimes from broken homes where proper moral and ethical values were not instilled; others, however, have
