now cognizant of problems such as pollution and the fact that landfills are becoming too crowded. Recycling and other green practices are viewed as positive in providing a sustainable environment
for the planet. In this article, Gabriel (2008) begins with the following observation: "Stating in the first line of an article on Green IT that it is my stated intention
to convince you that it does not exist might put a few of you off" (p.230). It is a rather humorous introduction, but the author explains that while it is
true that something can be done to make IT "greener" it cannot make it completely green because for example, computers cannot be made out of paper (Gabriel, 2008). Gabriels (2008)
contention that there is no such thing as green IT is a bit superfluous as the truth is that one can say the same of many industries. Yet, no matter
how this author introduces the article, it can be said that this is a well crafted article that does explore the nuances of creating a more efficient industry. In that
respect, the article is good. However, it might have been more concisely and directly written. The main point is not that Green IT does not exist, but rather that green
IT does exist in the fact that people are doing something about the dilemma. Gabriel (2008) reports on the progress of the industry in its attempt to consider environmental factors.
The author does provide the reader with a great deal of information on the problems with IT and how its environmental impact affects the worlds future. Examples of what
