Indeed, everything that occurs in the workplace has a significant influence upon and importance to strive for economic security. Issues such as the glass ceiling, gender discrimination and lack of minority advancement all dictate the manner in which women will either prosper or languish within the ongoing economic battle with men. The strides that women have made in the workplace are significant; indeed, there is a considerable difference between the garment worker of the nineteenth century and the corporate CEO of the 1990s. However, there still remain limitations as to the lengths women are allowed to go within the corporate world, in that the glass ceiling is always looming overhead. "Ive always said that well have true equality when we have as many incompetent women in positions as we have incompetent men" (Maley, 1997, p. 52). In response to the glass ceiling hindrance that is so prevalent in todays workplace, some prefer to think of it as being made of plastic "because plastic is even harder to break than glass" (Maley, 1997, p. 52). That only relatively few women have broken through the gender barriers from a century ago is indicative of the still stringent attitude society takes in relation to women in the workplace. Advancement opportunity may well be the most important aspect with regard to the economic inequity that exists between men and women. J.
