watch Mom interact with her customers. I always brought something to occupy me - my homework, my sketchpad, books or magazines I was reading - but my main occupation was
to surreptitiously watch and listen as Mom cut and styled hair. Mom had a knack for putting people at ease. Busy adults would come into the shop, tense
from a days work or harried about the tasks they had planned for themselves for that day and she would, first of all, sit them down at the shampoo sink
and gently wash their hair, massaging the scalp and talking in a slow, smooth voice, "Doesnt that feel good?" she would ask and the client would always murmur agreement. I
could see the tension drain out of the persons body. Furrowed brows would smooth out and, as the tension of the day left them-if only for a little while-they would
close their eyes and smile. While cutting their hair, Mom seemed to sense the needs of each client. Some people liked to talk and before they left Mom would
know everything about them just from a few polite questions. Some people seemed to go into a meditative state and Mom respected their silence. All of them left with
a neat, clean appearance that was enhanced by attractively styled hair. It always seemed to me that people left happier and more confident than when they came in. This
was particularly true for ladies who came in for what Mom called the "full treatment." They got their manicures-sometimes pedicures also-and got their hair cut, styled, colored and highlighted. I
