trust, their neighbors. Parents hesitate to let their children have the freedom to explore their neighborhoods because the fear of what dangers may lurk in the streets. Yet, paradoxically, in
many cases, parents appear to have abdicated their role in teaching their children responsible behavior. Last year, during Super Bowl weekend, my sister-in-law was killed by a drunk driver,
someone who used the big game as an excuse for irresponsibility. In order for society to improve, in order for more young lives not to be lost in vane, responsibility
has to be taken and it is a communitys law enforcement officers who lead the way. As a law enforcement officer, I would like to teach and instruct community
youth about the tragic effects of alcohol and illegal drug abuse. No one plans on ruining their lives or the lives of their families or others. Yet, this is often
the consequence of alcohol and drug abuse. The drunk driver who took the life of my sister-in-law and caused a family to grieve, undoubtedly did not set out that day
with the intention of taking a life. People should realize the way that drugs and alcohol can impair judgement and that the consequences of such impaired judgement can be tragic.
I would like to positively impact the behavior of young people in this regard and be an influence to decrease behaviors such as drunk driving. In saving a young life
from drug abuse, the police officer touches many lives and makes the community a better place. This sort of interaction with a community also influences the way in which law
enforcement officers are perceived. In too many of our countrys urban areas, police are viewed by members of ethnic or racial minorities as the "enemy." Through the development of community
