Hybrid homes provides a grand strategy for the thrifty, environmentally conscious home owner. For example, some of these new styled homes have triple glazed windows and a wind driven ventilation system (Underhill & Beith, 2006). Those are just a few items that may be found in the hybrid. An 84 home development in London is embarking on an experiment by creating a model community of hybrid homes (Underhill & Beith, 2006). Authors explain that the builders "are all at the forefront of a global trend toward reducing energy consumption in the home" (Underhill & Beith, 2006). There are already homes that have incorporated some energy savings changes, but some homes are built purely to be "green." While reminiscent of the houses to be featured on the television show Extreme Homes, as they are different, these new types of abodes are not really all that extreme. They are like ordinary houses, but have special features to save the homeowner money, at least in the long run. Of course, these innovations do not come cheap, but they are environmentally friendly and will save the consumer money on oil and gas. One writer describes the new look of these green homes as follows: "Flat, unobtrusive solar tiles cover the roof and augment power. Tankless heat-as-you-use water heaters and super efficient windows reduce demand. The result is a wash - "zero" net energy consumption once the house is built" ("Going hybrid," 2006, p.8).
