but they do not tell the whole story. For example, the unemployment rate in 1998 for those with college degrees was 1.8% ("Unemployment" PG). As educational levels decrease, unemployment tends to increase; for those who had less than a bachelors degree, it was 3.0% and then went to 4.0 % for those with only a high school diploma (PG). Finally, the unemployment rate for those who did finish high school was as high as 7.1 % (PG). The rates are telling. One could conclude that the college degree does at least ensure employment and hints that those who have degrees are happier with their jobs. A student writing on this subject might want to point out that such an assumption is a giant leap. All the statistics show is that there are slightly less people who are unemployed with bachelors degrees than those who have some college. At the same time, other statistics add to the data bank. Among all American adults who are aged 25 or older, as many as 10 % live below the poverty level (OHare 53). As for those who are living in poverty, the statistics climb to one in four for those without a high school diploma (53). Yet, just 3 % of adults with a bachelors degree or higher have incomes below the poverty line (53). Of course, one cannot deny that education in some way is tied to ones ability to get and keep a good job.
