Herod did a lot of amazing things as king, but later in life, he would endure physical and mental illnesses that were widely documented. Because of the length of time
between the present and the time in which Herod lived, it is impossible to know how much he suffered. Much of what is known comes from early historians and biblical
accounts. Yet, it has been reported that Herod tried to commit suicide. Clearly, this man was in pain, and he was seemingly mentally unstable. Might someone be forgiven for
his crimes if he is mentally or physically ill? Although it is true that many murderers are punished, mental illness is a valid defense. With the power of the kingship,
Herod was able to order murders and have them carried out. Yet, an ordinary man might have just dreamed of murdering his family or perhaps murdered only his family and
not all the infants in a city. Thus, Herods illness was something that would see a remarkable shift in his behavior. The nature of his crimes were magnified only because
of the power he possessed. It should also be noted that during Herods reign, things improved a great deal for the people. Herod has been erroneously portrayed as a
negative figure when in fact he made things better for the populace. Herod built up Rome during his years on the planet, and he also created a cultural mecca that
