the emphasis shifting from patient medical care to medical establishments and insurance companies. But while the healthcare corporate elite grow wealthier, the quality of healthcare and prevention is declining.
Shortly after announcing his candidacy for President of the United States with healthcare reform the focal point of his campaign, junior Illinois Senator Barack Obama (2007) noted, "We spend
less than 4 cents of every healthcare dollar on prevention and public health, even though 80% of the risk factors involved in the leading causes of death are preventable" (p.
21). Healthcare in America is in serious need of reform for reasons that involve cost, insurance, accessibility, and lack of focus. The United States spends an astounding excess of
$2 trillion on medical care annually (Obama, 2007). As far as a per-person breakdown is concerned, the average American has more than $7,000 yearly healthcare expenses (Snow, 2009, p.
