children left to rot in nurseries where there is little specialist care, a lack of food and few prospects, the need for families that want to give these children a
home become even more important. It is in this situation that there the lack of families to look after the children is even more dire, yet entire segments of society
are being barred form taking on the responsibly of becoming adoptive parent. This is not due to criminal records, health problems, or even questions of personality, but due to their
sexual orientation. Sates such as Florida have a ban on gays adopting, citing that it is for the "best interest of children" (Marcus, 2002; 1298). However, this is not
based on any real facts, and is costing many needy children a home or security in an existing home. If the concerns were real surely there would be the same
level of controversy over foster carers, which there is not (Somers, 2002). It is interesting to see that on one denies the
fact that gays just as heterosexuals will be able to provide love for the child as well as the physical needs. The problem appears to be in the impression
or perception than many observers have, that a gay parent may have an unhealthy impact on the metal development of the child. Public perception is clear on a correlation between
homosexual parents and drugs, depression and even suicide (Marcus, 2002), indeed, in a recent poll in South Florida 40% of voters said they were less likely to vote for a
