value of the "Greek" houses on campus. This paper argues that fraternities are bad for American university life. Why Fraternities are Bad The first thing that comes to
mind with regard to the problems fraternities cause is that when a group of people get together and pledge to support each other, the "herd instinct" takes over. Fraternity members
might be "egged on" or encouraged by their fraternity brothers to behave in ways they would never consider if they were alone. Further, fraternity (and sorority) members tend to
see themselves as "above" the rest of the student body, and they justify their bad behavior on the grounds that ordinary standards dont apply to them. This again comes
from the fact that members have to be chosen to join the organization, and any time a person joins a "club" he or she tends to feel superior to those
who are not members. But these observations are based on human behavior in general and arent restricted to the campus. Lets look at fraternities specifically. In addition to
encouraging their members to feel "special" and pledging to support each other, there are significant problems with fraternities. Lets take just three: hazing, alcohol abuse and drug abuse.
Hazing is a vicious practice that in some cases seems very close to torture. Its a dangerously outmoded and silly custom that has resulted in serious injury and loss
of life. Its also nonsense: just because a young man can drink a fifth of liquor and survive is no guarantee that hes going to succeed in a
chosen career. Hazing simply gives fraternity members an outlet for the streak of cruelty that is a part of the makeup of all human beings. And it can have
