or to be able to end their own lives at will, but doing so poses ethical problems. Somerville claims that there are two reasons to oppose euthanasia, one of which
is the fact that it is wrong to kill another human being, and the other is that the risks of legalization outweighs any societal benefits (33). Yet, when discussing euthanasia,
a student writing on this subject might want to point out that there are often gray areas. There are loopholes, or fine lines. Many physicians as well as philosophers draw
a distinction between active and passive euthanasia, taking the position that it is ethical to allow a person to die "naturally" but not acceptable to do anything that hastens the
process (Hall 10). The philosopher James Rachels presents a hypothetical situation to explain the difference (Hall 10). He provides a story line where an uncle stood to inherit money
from a six year old boy (Hall 10). The situation was that if the boy was taking a bath and the uncle held his head under water so he drowned,
would there be a difference if the boy slipped under the water while the uncle passively watched (Hall 10)? The uncle, in the second instance, could have saved the boy
s life but chose not to act. However, in the first instance he literally killed him. Rachels conclusion, in light of the example, is that it makes little sense to
distinguish the two (Hall 10). In some way, he is correct. Watching someone die, whether or not it is by ones hand, is unconscionable. Hence, a student writing on this
subject should note that passive euthanasia is also something that must be discussed. Taking away lifesaving measures is tantamount to euthanasia. Yet, even if one were only to oppose active
