Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 3 page paper looks at why design should not be undertaken with the average person in mind. The paper argues that for design purposes there is no such thing as the average person and that more may be gained if diversity is embraced and allowed for in design. The paper cites many examples to illustrate the points raised. The bibliography cites 2 sources.

those who will use the product. A good design will render the product suitable to be used in the way desired by those the product was targeted for. In markets
where many manufactures target the mass markets it is very tempting for a designer to design for the average consumer or user. The argument out forward by a student may
be that the average consumer may be representative, and the ability to satisfy the needs of the average consumer will result in a well designed product. However this approach is
a fallacy, the average person does not exist (Evans et al, 1990). Averages are calculated mathematically, made up of the amalgamation of all inputs that are then divided to create
an average. In effect, the average, if it exists, will only be a very small percentage of the population, and as such they are not representative. There are many ways
of demonstrating this absence we can look at groups of people. For example, sports people, if a designer wants to deign for a large number of different sportsman they may
look to the average sportsman. Sportsmen, just like the general population, are made up of a range of different people with divergent characteristics. They will include will be made up
of strong heavy ruby players, large sumo wrestlers, short and very light weight jockeys, slim and toned athletes, with some sports consisting of only young people while some sports will
include much older participants. However, if the average of all of them is taken it is unlikely to result in a person with characteristics that are not associated with any
of the particular s sports and as such the resulting average is unlikely to be a sportsman or to excel oat any sports, meaning that any design for this average
