Although various cultures and religions have practiced veiling at various points in history, the contemporary practice of veiling is most typically
associated with Islam. There is considerable misunderstanding and controversy surrounding what to many seems a matter of expressing not only personal choice but also religious freedom. This is
particularly true in the Western world where Islam is a less visible component of most peoples daily lives. From a mainstream Western perspective, Islamic women seem to lead lives
which are almost incomprehensible. This perception is, consciously or not, attributed to the visual image called to mind when one considers Muslim women. This image almost automatically includes
overt aspects such as dress. In many ways the veil has become symbolic of the differences and, in fact, of the misunderstandings and controversy that surround Muslim women in
mainstream Western culture. Admittedly, in some facets of Muslim culture women have been subjugated and even abused by their male counterparts. Westerners
sometimes associate even the dress required of a Muslim woman with this subjugation and abuse. Such may indeed be the case for some Muslim women and some aspects of
