Upholding an efficacious work ethic is something that is taught through many years of positive influence, which is why there exists a certain portion of the population that does not harbor this critically important characteristic and, thereby, does not look upon work as a beneficial element in ones overall existence. To work is to produce; to be productive is to make a difference; to make a difference is what it means to be alive. "People who experience more meaningful days view their work not as a series of tasks, but as a contribution. You must dispel the perception (one subscribed to by many Americans) that contribution is something that occurs outside work, in church on Sunday, and only with personal financial sacrifice. In a system of trade, barter, buy and sell, America has bought into the belief that Mother Theresa does meaningful work, but sales managers do not. Consequently, most people are left feeling empty because they dont see their contribution" (Lorber, 2002). That the CEO of a Fortune 500 company makes more of a contribution than a busboy at the local diner is a presumption western society has come to reflect as success. Indeed, ones position amidst the comprehensive work environment is duly indicative of the level of contribution bestowed; however, it in no way means that just because one holds a position of hierarchical importance that his or her contributions are any more valuable than one who flips burgers for minimum wage. The extent to which an individual takes pride in his work is based upon a sense of accomplishment from within, a characteristic that is instilled through the guidance and reinforcement of positive influences in that individuals life.
