People who fight with one another are essentially engaged in a war, even if there is no killing. Differing opinions, ideas, and ideals will ultimately lead many people to fight
and in some cases these disagreements turn into full fledged wars. The following paper delves further into why wars happen, using the Civil War of the United States as an
example. Why Do Wars Happen?: The Civil War As mentioned, disagreements often are what lead to war, thus explaining why war happens. For example, the Trojan War is
often argued as a war that started with the so-called kidnapping of Helen of Troy. One could well argue that she was just an excuse for one side to try
to gain power and possession of another which illustrates a differing of opinion where one side wants to keep its land and culture and the other wants to own that
land and culture. WWII was, in large part, about Germany (as well as Japan) owning new territory and having power over others. These wars seem to reflect a need to
possess power over another but not all wars are fought for that reason. For example, the American Civil War was fought to keep the country unified on one hand and
fought to keep independence on the other. The American Civil War, from the perspective of the North and President Lincoln, was fought to keep the Union as a whole.
Many states were claiming that they were going to secede from the Union, which would have created a different nation separate from the United States at the time. The South
even had their own President for a short period of time. This indicates that on their side of the war they desired to remain autonomous from the North. There
