modifications cruise lines have made throughout the industry. Once thought of only as a destination for the elderly and retired, pleasure cruising has turned into the fastest growing portion
of the American hospitality industry, experiencing an increase of six hundred percent since 1980. Carnival Cruise Lines - one of the most popular and recognizable throughout the industry -
has been instrumental in the metamorphosis that has taken place, establishing cruise vacations as "a hit with the masses" (Rice, 1989, p. 108), greatly responsible for the industrys take of
five billion dollars back in the late 1980s and early 1990s. One of the cornerstones to success within the cruising industry is the fact that the ships themselves have turned
into as much of a destination as the ports to which they travel. Onboard activities and amenities have expanded to such a degree with all cruise lines that passengers
have been known to forego the ports of call in exchange for staying on the ship (Redeker et al, 1998). The list of things to do can fill several
days if people so desire, what with the twenty-four hour availability of food, the excitement of the casino and the fun of the nightclubs. In addition, there are Broadway-
and Las Vegas-style shows, parties, health spas, room service, live entertainment, duty-free shopping, movie theaters, video and board game rooms, libraries, nonsmoking facilities, rock climbing walls, miniature golf, as well
