variety of reasons and they continue smoking for a variety of reasons as well. They may smoke to help alleviate stress, or to keep themselves from eating too much. They
may continue smoking because they are addicted, or because they believe it helps them think better. Smokers know the dangers, but they continue to smoke. This paper examines first
the condition of smokers, the various reasons we may imagine to be the cause of initiating smoking, and the reasons why quitting may be difficult. The paper begins with an
introduction that examines, without sources, why people begin smoking and some basic elements in tobacco smoking. The paper then briefly examines research and provides a general literature review of the
topic. Introduction Most people assume that individuals who smoke do so for the same reasons, with the first smoke likely being the result of peer pressure and/or rebellion.
Recent studies, however, indicate that there are many reasons why people first smoke and why they continue to smoke. It is not a simple cut and dried topic of investigation,
nor is it a simple cut and dried condition that has simple answers. We can assume that in some cases people begin smoking because of peer pressure and/or rebellion.
But some people may begin smoking because they found it helped alleviate stress, made them feel they could concentrate better, and essentially take the edge off of stressful realities. Some
may even start smoking so that they do not eat so much, to stave off hunger. While these sound like ridiculous excuses for non-smokers, the truth is that smoking tobacco
produces all of these effects. Tobacco possesses chemicals that do take the edge off of stress, they serve as a tool that truly enables some people to think more clearly,
