Many people may wonder why it is such a huge industry, and why it can continue is a seemingly civilized nation/world. As is the case with many illegal activities it seems that the primary motivation is money. The following paper examines why people become involved in human trafficking, what is the motivation behind the activity. Why Do People Get Involved in Human Trafficking? Human trafficking comes in many different forms. For the most part it is generally the movement of women and children, illegally, to various parts of the world where they are essentially slaves of one kind or another. They are sold into prostitution and other jobs. In essence, it is the enslavement of people and the selling of people. They are treated like drugs or weapons, as commodities. One author notes that "Trafficking in human persons is the fastest growing form of transnational organized crime. It has become the third most lucrative form of trafficking, next only to illegal trade in drugs and arms" (Ferguson, 2003). And, like drugs or weapons it seems like the primary motivation for human trafficking is money. Even from the perspective of the individual being sold for many women are without options and assume they are nothing more than commodities. Or in the case of children parents may sell their children for the money. Of course there are also many cases wherein the people are abducted and have no choice in the matter. In one article, focusing on the human trafficking that takes place in Nigeria, the author notes that the primary motivation involves poverty.
