many perspectives. It stands as a very unique situation, many argue, in light of the fact that it was one of the most profound wars that the United States lost. The United States, not used to losing any war they entered, stood bemused at what had happened and today there are still varied arguments about why the United States actually lost this war. In the student requesting this essays textbook (author or editor of the book, and title of the book unknown to this researcher) it is noted that "in an important sense---as people on both sides of the issue acknowledge-the United States could not have won the Vietnam War. Only the South Vietnamese government could do that" (174). The following essay examines two arguments in the book, A Faltering and Confused Resolve by Lt. Gen. Phillip B. Davidson (1988) and The People in the Middle by Ronald H. Spector (1993) and sides primarily with Spectors arguments. Why Did the United States Lose the Vietnam War? Davidsons argument revolves primarily around the fact that the United States did not have the solid plan that the communist forces had in the war. For the United States it was simply believed that they could perhaps subtly support South Vietnam and thus bring order back to the nation. They did not take into consideration that the war was a revolutionary war and they did not take into consideration other approaches that could have been taken, such as Johnson truly declaring a war that would have brought in Congress and the support of the people of the United States. In the end Davidson states, "To sum it all up, the United States lost the war in the way all wars are lost-to a superior strategy ...
