to Salem when she could have left for good? What is his purpose in taking her back to live among the people who judged her so harshly? The answer
to that of course lies in the character of Hester herself, and what we know of her. We know that she is described as "headstrong," and that she is a
passionate enough woman to have an affair with a man to whom she is not married. We also know that she has the strength to withhold his name from her
prying neighbors, and no matter how they torment her, she never reveals the name of her daughters father. We also learn, at the end of the book, that she
spends much of her time helping others, something she genuinely enjoys. Whether she is doing it as a sort of penance is something we can speculate on, but it seems
she genuinely cares for others. At the end of the book, her lover is dead: having finally found the courage to admit the little girl is his, Arthur Dimmesdale
dies, leaving his family on their own. They leave Boston, and we only know what happens by rumor; they seem to have gone to Europe, and Pearl may live there.
Then Hester returns to Boston. Because she is strong, and because she loves Pearl and Dimmesdale, it seems unlikely that she is doing penance, because she sees nothing wrong in
what she did. It was an act of love between two people who cared deeply for each other. Pearl is the result of the union, but her name suggests that
she is the "Pearl of great price" mentioned in the Bible. This too militates against Hesters having returned to Boston as a penance, because its hard to imagine that she
