who commit acts, that are outside of ordinary behavior. while norms are developed in society, sometimes, norms are let go of for a variety of reasons. Durkheim (1997) writes: "The
hypercivilization... breeds the anomie tendency..." (p.323). Anomie, as first described by Emile Durkheim, is a sense of normlessness. People feel as if the rules do not apply. Nothing matters. Therefore,
they are less likely to adhere to rules and dictates that are considered normal behavior. It does appear that norms in society govern the behavior of people, but it is
also the case that ideas about what constitutes normal is different from person to person. Often, people get their ideas about norms from their friends and families. They obtain norms
from the people they live with and who they associate with. For example, alcoholics often drink a lot at home so children raised in the environment with an alcoholic may
exhibit behavior that is deviant from the standpoint of society but normal to those who live with him. Once when I was visiting at my friend Rickys house, his father
was drinking a lot of beer. I was not sure why he was drinking so much, and then when I wandered into the kitchen, I realized that he had cases
of beer stacked to the ceiling. I asked Ricky why there was so much beer in the kitchen, and he replied "Oh, thats nothing. You should see how much my
cousin Kevin drinks." I questioned the drinking habit again, but Ricky claims that the family is normal. He added that there are a lot of beer commercials and everyone else
he knows drinks a lot. For Ricky, having a lot of alcohol around is the norm, but for society at large, this does not seem to be the case. Rather,
