While Robert is an intelligent student, he did not have the $500 to take a preparatory class that other students had because as he is from a poor
family. To most people, the idea of cheating is just wrong. Yet, Robert justifies the cheating because he feels he had an unfair disadvantage. The other children would have
done better--all else being equal--simply because they had $500 more than he. At least that is how Robert sees the ethical dilemma and so does not see himself as doing
anything wrong. Clearly, there are both sides to every argument and the classic philosophers may be able to help in discerning which is the most appropriate point of view in
this situation. Yet, from the outset most would not concur that cheating is morally correct in most circumstances, unless perhaps it is to save a life. For example, in a
Law & Order episode, the District Attorney failed to identify herself as a DA and let a dangerous murderer, who had a knife to a hostages throat, think that she
was his lawyer. Legally, she was wrong, but one would be hard pressed to say she was morally incorrect as her failure to properly identify herself surely saved lives. In
the hypothetical situation at hand, there is no heroism, so it would be difficult for a student to make a case for cheating. In any event, a look at the
philosophers theories will help to support the idea that cheating is wrong under almost any circumstance. In Rhetoric, Aristotle says:" Life accompanies health simultaneously (but not health life), knowledge accompanies
the act of learning subsequently, cheating accompanies sacrilege potentially, since a man who has committed sacrilege is always capable of cheating" (PG). Here, one might conclude that Aristotle is against
