as well as certain protocols that should be followed and while it is true that some people can lead by example, or by book knowledge, it is often charisma and a natural ability to lead that seems to be most effective. While that point is arguable, as certainly management skills and other leadership qualities are a given, it seems that personality can go a long way to prompt people to follow. Before examining the quality of charisma, it is important to look at leadership in general. What is this illusive thing called leadership? Most agree that the definition of leadership is illusive because there are many different definitions. Although there are a variety of ways to define the concept, two which seem to be the best have come from Harvard Professor Rosabeth Ross Kanter and the Wharton Schools Tom Gerrity (Willax, 2001). Kanter says that leadership is "the art of mastering change ... the ability to mobilize others efforts in new directions " (2001, p.9). Gerrity explains it as follows: "Leadership is the ability to inspire and develop others ... to bring forth their fullest potential and highest capabilities ... to encourage them to accomplish a mission as a team " (Willax, 2001, p.9). They are each good definitions, but they say essentially the same thing. They explain what leadership is and is not. It does appear that leadership is the ability to prod someone in a positive direction, without the use of coercion. Rather, with skill and an inner quality called charisma, people can get others to do what they want.
