and while there is not a general rule in terms of how one is able to find his or her way to a high level corporate position, there are general
assumptions and protocols. For example, there is a trend now for CFOs to become CEOs. For example, at McDonalds, Matt Paull is the CFO and also a likely candidate to
become CEO in the future (Foster, 2006). Richard Nanula, Disneys CFO, quit his job to become a CEO at another corporation (Brewis, 1999). While this is a decided trend, its
overall value is unclear. A student asks whether or not finance departments are the best places to train for the ultimate management position, but also theorizes that it is.
The student explains that the role of the financial manager is such that there is a great amount of exposure to a variety of corporate issues. Also, the student notes
that financial managers are leaders in their own right, at least when it come to the financial departments. Leadership skills are certainly acquired in the role and so, in some
way, it is a good way to train. Finally, the personal characteristics of the financial manager are such that he or she should fit well into the CEO role. Of
course, that is one side of the story. There are those who do not feel that the CFO position is the best training ground for CEO. Clearly, it is not
the only one. First, it should be said that not everyone is cut out to be the Chief Executive Officer of a firm. Sometimes, the Chief Financial Officer, or CFO,
