Bully: Do gossip and rumors count as punishable behavior?" and then argues against the authors point. The paper supports the view that bullying in society should be monitored and that
laws or rules should be enforced in order to make society better. No additional sources cited. SA134bul.rtf John Leo (2001) reports on a survey which states that
bullying is something that is rampant in society. He provides evidence. There is a study that Leo focuses on which suggests rumors are seen as a form of bullying. He
categorizes this as psychological bullying, as opposed to the physical type like hitting and threats (2001). He says: "Calling somebody a jerk and spreading rumors counted as bullying in the
study" (2001, p.PG). Of course, many people can recall a time when they had themselves called somebody a jerk-or worse-out of anger and later regretted it. And then, Leo explains
that in this particular study, repetitive teasing would also count (2001). Most parents are familiar with that type. Even the avoidance of certain people-noted in the study as shunning and
exclusion-counts as a bullying status. Of course, while the article starts out with a definition on bullying, or at least a reference to a particular study, the reader gets
a sense of where the article will go. That is, Leo does not agree with the report. He says that with a definition like that, all children involved in bullying,
or being bullied, would be around 100 percent (Leo, 2001). He is probably correct as children are notoriously cruel. They form gangs, cliques and are downright mean. They create situations
where other children must conform or be outcasts. Psychologists and parents see this as inevitable. Many adults remember their early years with dread.
