Britain. Britains history in South Africa began many years before, however, and they had already annexed other regions such as Adelaide. Also, the Dutch were there even before the
British and they had taken control of other parts of South Africa. Britain did not have any real interest in the region per se; it was the presence of both
the Dutch and the Germans that led Britain to pursue colonization in South Africa. Colonization led to any number of problems between the natives and the foreigners invading their
lands. Through the course of colonizing the different regions, various treaties had been signed between Britain and the natives. Transvaal was not interested in anything the Britons could offer; their
primary goal was to retain their independence and their right to govern themselves. When the British did finally succeed in annexing the Transvaal, it was in direct violation of a
previous treaty. The British then ruled with a heavy hand and the British immigrants looked upon the natives as inferior servants. AS the background information provided on the following
pages will demonstrate, the reasons for the annexation had to do with greed. The annexation did not work for any number of reasons. For one thing the Transvaal people refused
to lie over and play dead giving in to the demands of the British. The British government did not understand these peoples overwhelming desire to be independent and the fact
