This 6 page paper discusses this question. In order to arrive at a conclusion, the writer begins by explaining the history of the word, which some believe dates as far back as the latte 16th century but certainly was in use in the late 17th century. As with most words, this one was not originated as a form of degradation or insult or for any other negative reason. It was a word that was used to refer to a group of dark-skinned people but time changed this until the term represents a horrendous time in history and is offensive and insulting to an entire race of people. The writer explains how it has become an acceptable term for blacks to use among themselves but it is not acceptable for whites to use this term towards blacks. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
