an individual is said to have a backbone because he says what he means, and means what he says. All of these expressions go to describing the concept of assertiveness.
Havelin (2000) says that "people who are assertive stand up for themselves without hurting others" (p.6). The last part of Havelins take on this subject is important. It is
one thing to say what one wants, but it is another to accept the reaction. If someone asserts himself in the family milieu and another member is unhappy, a fight
may ensue. Part of being assertive however is taking a stand and letting the cards fall where they may. This means not changing behavior based on the potential for a
negative reaction. This type of thinking is consistent with a healthy attitude about life. The opposite of assertiveness may be inertia. In other words, instead of voicing an opinion
or doing what one wants to do, an individual becomes a people pleaser. He or she may have a high tolerance for inappropriate behavior and this comes about largely from
"seeing one or both of our parents repeatedly refuse to take care of their own needs" (Friel & Friel, 1988, p. 88). Taking care of ones needs is an important
reason to become assertive. For example, if someone goes to a doctor or hospital and they are left to sit in the waiting room for an hour or more, someone
who is meek may just accept their fate. In fact, an example of this was shown on the Dr. Phil show when he helped a woman to become more assertive.
