making ones self happy for the moment--or is it something more than that? It is not an easy question to answer. People look at individuals struggle. They are told that if they are not "happy" in their marriages, to get out. Often, they do, and this is at the expense of their children perhaps. They then look for a new companion in search of that illusive thing called happiness. This search has created a culture that is replete with out of control desires, a sense that instant gratification is good, and a disconnectedness that is quite apparent. If happiness is not finding that perfect person or landing that perfect job, what is it and why does it matter? A look at happiness from the viewpoint of Aristotle may help to get a grasp on this compelling subject. In Aristotles view, happiness does not lie in amusement but rather in contemplation. In other words, pursuing money, fame and glory is not really where happiness lies. Happiness is in the type of life one makes for themselves. In Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle outlines the various types of lives that people may choose and one of these is the contemplative life. Aristotle (2000) explains that most men identify good, or happiness, with mere pleasure and that is the first type of life. Many are familiar with this type where people simply do what they want and are often driven by lust or greed. Political life is another choice and fewer make this one, but then there is the contemplative life (Aristotle, 2000). A consideration of such prominent types of lives demonstrates that people of superior refinement and active disposition equate happiness with honor and this may be equated with the end of political life (2000).
