Introduction Entrepreneurship plays important role within the development of any economy. In order for an economy to survive and thrive, new businesses need to start-up and growth and innovation needs to take place in order to provide jobs. While many businesses started may be the result of innovation and creativity not all start-ups with the entrepreneurial. Importantly, entrepreneurs play a disproportionate role in economic development is very often start-up multiple businesses (Winn, 2005). This is particularly important at a time of recession, with small start-up businesses often able to play a significant role stimulating the economy (Nellis and Parker, 2006). With entrepreneurs being able to stimulate the economy, and create jobs, where one segment of the community appears to be underrepresented there is a potentially high opportunity cost that will impact on the commercial environment. There appear to be some constraints in place of potential entrepreneurs, the number of different social groups are underrepresented. While the general commercial environment has benefited from antidiscrimination legislation, ensuring that employees do not suffer as a result of personal or institutional bias due to characteristic such as gender, race, disability etc. it is not as easy to legislate for equality in the self employed sector.
