was intentional. And while this is an important topic today, as the twenty-first century unfolds, it was always a concern. Even during the time of the original Olympics, the Greeks
tried to hype themselves with herbs and mushrooms which were thought to enhance performance (Hecht, 1984). Performance enhancers were also used at the turn of the twentieth century
in the form of Vin Muriani, a widely used mixture of coca leaf extract with wine; it was used by French cyclists and by a champion lacrosse team in Peru
(1984). The use of steroids however, in order to enhance athletic performance, was not used until World War II (1984). German troops ingested steroids before battle in order to enhance
their aggressive nature (1984). The first use in respect to athletics had been credited to the Russians in 1954; the teams physician Dr. John D. Ziegler told Wade that the
Russians were giving testosterone to weight lifters as well as some female athletes (1984). The rest, as they say, is history. Today, many young people are experimenting with steroids.
A study done by Blue Cross and Blue Shield found that about 1 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 years have taken potentially dangerous performance-enhancing
drugs, despite the fact that 96 % ( Sweeney & Neff, 2001) of the youth surveyed understood the health consequences. And while there are health consequences associated with steroid
