some time and they deserve proper housing and sustenance, and the reality is that many black communities are impoverished. Much of the reason for the current state of affairs goes
to how blacks were treated in the past. They were chained and shackled and sold. Unlike immigrants who would come with money perhaps, these individuals were taken against their
will to a continent they did not want to go to, and so it is really no fault of their own that their communities are less successful than groups whose
past is not replete with the same type of economic and social struggle. While the economic ramifications of slavery is one thing, the suffering of black Americans ancestors is quite
another. Conneau explains that the slaves were shipped naked for the sake of cleanliness (82). Men and women were kept in separated quarters (82). The author, who was himself a
slave trader, noted that feeding times were at 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon and water was provided three times a day (82). Food is an interesting
consideration. Other documentation on slave diets is rather dismal. This subject creeps into current concerns as many black people in the United States have ancestors who came over on these
boats. This account provides just a glimpse into the life of a slave. After they arrived, they toiled in the fields at the whims of their masters. Many of the
women were raped, or succumbed to their masters and bore their children. The entire period of history in terms of slavery is disgusting. Attempts to explain it economically are insulting.
