paper briefly explores a few of them. Discussion We are interested here in adults who are already established in careers or in family life and return to school in their
30s, 40s or older, not high school students who dont immediately start college but decide to attend at a later date. For an older person to go and sit in
a classroom with other students who may be decades younger is a difficult task at best. Why do they do it? One important fact about returning students is that many
of them are women. In fact, women now "account for the majority (around 60%) of all students older than 29 years. Between 1970 and 2000, women went from being the
minority (42%) to the majority (56%) of the U.S. undergraduate population" (Max and Radunovich). At the graduate level, the change is even more pronounced, where women went from 39% to
58% of the graduate school population between 1970 and 2000 (Max and Radunovich). There are many reasons why women more than men return to school. For one thing, with a
divorce rate of close to 50%, there is a good chance that many women will find themselves without a partner to help raise the children, pay the bills and maintain
the house. They go back to school to improve their chances of getting a better job and increasing their income; in fact, increasing their income is "probably the number one
