the cinema of similar successful films; an imaginative director, Zack Snyder; and a charismatic and powerful star, Gerard Butler. Introduction The film 300 was the surprise smash hit
of 2007, and yet conventional wisdom says it should have come and gone without leaving a trace. Instead, people are still shouting THIS IS SPARTA at each other and discussions
about the film are ongoing. This paper explores why such an unlikely property became a hit. Discussion 300 had, apparently, nothing going for it. It had no stars (although its
protagonist, Gerard Butler, is now fast climbing the A list); it was based on a graphic novel; it dealt with an actual event and that event took place thousands of
years ago. All of that should have made it a bomb; instead, it made $70 million its opening weekend and packed theaters for weeks. When it was available on pay-per-view
it became the number one request and the DVD is a best-seller. Why? It seems to have been a combination of factors. First, Warner Bros. marketed the movie very smartly,
relying on its stunning visuals and unique look to entice viewers to the theater; it handled it in much the same way it had The Matrix, eight years earlier (Netburn,
2007). The studio made use of Comic-Con, the annual get-together of comic book lovers in San Diego; the con, which began as a small affair, has grown to be one
