home because his father, the king, is dead is seemingly bombarded with facts and mysteries that lead him to a level of insanity as he tries to uncover a truth
and revenge in relationship to that truth. One could well say that the opening statement in the play, "Whos there?" spoken by Bernardo may well summarize much of the play.
The following paper examines how this statement or question is embodied symbolically and otherwise throughout the play. Whos There?: Hamlet As mentioned, Hamlet is in a position where
he is trying to uncover a truth about the death of his father. His fathers ghost is a very powerful symbolic entity that relates to the "whos there" theme for
a ghost is very much an entity that cannot always be seen but is felt, making one wonder or ask "whos there?" The ghost of his father informs him that
he was murdered and so Hamlet set out to find the truth about "whos there" in relationship to his fathers murder. His murderer is the new king, the man who
has married Hamlets mother and this is a further symbolic connection to the theme for a new father is something that can make one wonder who has taken his fathers
place and who that person is. Throughout the play Hamlet is seemingly confused in many instances, which again embodies the theme of "whos there?" for Hamlet is trying to
uncover who is being true to him, who he can trust, and who he can honestly love. This is clearly an element involving his love of Ophelia as well. Hamlet,
having somewhat faked insanity, is put together with Ophelia at one point, by officials, in order to uncover "who" Hamlet may be. In essence, however, Ophelia is trying to figure
