While these competing theories can make it difficult to know what "the best" teaching strategies are, this is ultimately to the benefit of the discipline as a whole. In the real world, people learn differently, and teachers will often be called upon to adapt their teaching strategies in order to meet the needs of those students. This is especially true when teachers have students who are impacted by some form of developmental or learning disability. For instance, the teaching strategies used to educate socially-acclimated young children might not be at all appropriate for a young learner with autism spectrum disorder. Such an example highlights the fundamental importance of having a flexible and adaptive approach to educational style. This paper will explore the effectiveness of one particular educational approach, the "whole word" method, when teaching autistic children with the use of visual aides. This paragraph helps the student explain what the whole word method is. In order to understand what the whole word method is and how it can facilitate literacy in students with autism spectrum disorder, it is first necessary to understand what literacy itself is. Like education, literacy is an abstract concept that can be interpreted many different ways. The whole word method stems from an understanding of literacy known as the "Inquiry Model", which states as its core principle that literacy is "above all, a matter of developing critical thinking skills" (French, 1999).
