However, while the works are recognizable and well-known, their creator remains very much an enigma to literary critics and biographers who wish to understand the man behind the prose. Details of Shakespeares life have always been sketchy at best. Believed to have been born in the working class village of Stratford-on-Avon in 1564 to illiterate parents, Shakespeares own formal education ended at age thirteen, and according to one biographer, it is unlikely that he ever owned a book (Rubinstein 28). He apparently married Anne Hathaway in 1582, and their surviving children, both girls, were illiterate (Rubinstein 28). Following his marriage, there is a period of about a decade, of which very little is known, but depending on which biographical account is to be believed, Shakespeare served as a law clerk, soldier schoolteacher, or possibly even a world traveler (Rubinstein 28). However, there is no conclusive evidence to support any of these assertions, which has further deepened the mystery of Shakespeares life. He was believed to have been a comic actor at one time, and after he achieved success with his plays, Shakespeare proved to be a most elusive public figure, never formally addressing any attacks on his work, commenting on his popularity or penning any eulogy to any of the members of the royal family, most notably, Queen Elizabeth, for whom his plays were written to entertain (Sobran 44). There are only six copies of his signature, all appearing on legal documents, which means they could have been signed by a clerk or attorney, and of all the contemporary documents which feature Shakespeares name, none discuss his career as a dramatist (Rubinstein 28).
