"The Portable Karl Marx" offers an in-depth analysis of the man who was Karl Marx and the events and times that shaped Marxs opinions and were instrumental in his development
of the original precepts of communism. Fundamental to the development of Marxs political and economic thinking was the dictum, simplistically reduced, that all events are determined by economic forces. Details
of an Ordinary Life In the opening pages of "The Portable Karl Marx," the reader comes to understand that Karl Marx was of relatively ordinary beginnings as Kamenka offers a
reproduction of Marxs birth certificate that states that a male baby having been born on May 5, 1818, was presented to the "Registrar of Civil Status of the Burgomasters Office
of Trier" (pp. 5). The child was presented by Heinrich Marx who stated that he was the babys father and that Henriette Presborck was the mother. The existence of the
baby was duly witnessed and noted and presumably Heinrich and "Carl" returned home to Henrietta. The reader then learns that, according to his "certificate of matriculation," that the 17-year-old Karl
Marx was judged to have "good abilities ... satisfactory application in classical languages, in German and in history, satisfactory application in matemathics and only some application in French" (pp. 6).
In short, it would appear that he was a typical and educated, middle-class, student of 1835. Accepted the next year to the University of Bonn, he set out to
study law, philosophy, with the occasional Greek and Roman history and mythology thrown in. He had a run-in with the authorities regarding public drunkenness and "causing a disturbance at night"
(pp. 9). His sister adored him and the young woman he was apparently in love with despite their age difference. He was, to all appearances, just an average young man.
