The way that decisions are made in organizations is complex. It may be assumed that leaders or management are responsible for all decisions, but the reality is not this simple. There are a wide range of influences on the way organizational decision are made, from the bias of decision making to influences from internal and external stakeholders. However, the reality is that decision making processes in businesses can be much more complex, there are a range of influences that can constrain or limit choices. These may be through a direct impact or an indirect impact, and may be seen within decisions that are assumed to be made by the leaders. The influences that can be present and determine a course of action can come from a variety of sources, the environment itself may limit the choices dependant on the choices that are available, this can be seen as a model where leaders still make decisions, but there are influences that impact on the way that decision is made. There are also influences from employees, which can be persuasive or more forceful, the marketplace and consumers, consumer groups, may also force decisions and the last influence that can force or influence a decision is government or government bodies, either through regulation and legislation, or as a result of pressure and encouragement. The traditional approach to decision making may be aided with different models or tools. The main stages are the same in all processes; to define the problem, to consider the alternatives, to evaluate the best course of action and to make the decision. This process may take seconds, or may take months, depending on the context. With this process there will also be three major components that are all present in the different models. The criteria, which are the standards that will be used by hose making decisions to evaluate the alternatives, these have also been referred to as the interests (Thompson, 2008).
