characters are mice that desire cheese, but while they have a deep yearning for the cheese, they at the same time must accept the fact that the cheese could change
(Johnson, 1998). Thus, they must focus on something else (Johnson, 1998). While the books cast of characters are not human, the book is clearly aimed at the human set. Actually,
it seems as if the book is aimed more with a business focus in mind than on one that considers the trivialities of daily life. Overall, Johnsons (1998) book
is about change and how employees can be more effective if in fact they can accept change. While that is the primary theme, how the mice react is an essential
component of the work. It helps to convey the fact that people do react differently to a single situation. This makes reaction difficult to predict. People for example may do
nothing and wait to see what happens when confronted with change. Many people do this in the context of their jobs. They are perhaps slightly unhappy, but they do not
do anything about the discontent. They simply wait and see if something changes. In the real world of work, it is also the case that things change tremendously and people
must adapt to the change or become obsolete. Some of the individuals will sail through the changes while others will retire, either voluntarily or involuntary. Those who do not wait
and see what happens may leave earlier for a different firm, thus securing their future at least for a time. Of course, they can never escape because change will occur
at some point no matter where they work or live. The fact that change renders jobs obsolete is an idea that recently emerged from presidential candidate John McCains speech.
