of England for all time (Editor 90). The reviewer was correct for Tennyson is studied today as one of the greatest poets. Reading "The Lady of Shallot" provides the reader
evidence of Tennysons great talents, of his ability to combine words so as to create vivid and musical expressions and yet there is also a restraint one can hear.
Modern critics say that Tennyson has kept his place among the great poets because of his artistry in writing. They say it is remarkable
as is his versatility and point to the fact that no English poet "has left masterpieces in so many different kinds of verse." He brings rhythm, a musical quality, an
imaginative use of words to his work with a sense of subtle spirituality in much of his work. The aggregate of these qualities is what makes him an artist (Worlds
Best Poetry(a) 1). Walt Whitman, on the other hand, was both praised and condemned in nearly the same breath; he was either the
best or the worst and the critic could not decide which. Consider these two excerpts from the same critique, the first is in response to Whitmans calling himself a great
poet: "Do you think the best honors of the earth are won so easily, Walt Whitman? Do you think city and country are to fall before the vehement egotism of
your recitative of yourself? (Editor 1855, p. 90). The critics accused Whitman of using a "strange voice" but later in the critique of Whitmans Leaves of Grass, the reviewer said:
