The following paper examines the white tailed deer. White Tailed Deer The white tailed deers scientific name is Odocoileus virginianus and it exists in the class Mammalia, the order, Artiodactyla, and the family Cervidae (Desert USA, 2007). "White-tailed deer are 3-3 1/2 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 50-250 pounds" (White-Tailed Deer, 2007). In the days of colonization, when there was far more wildlife in the nation such as bears and wolves and wild cats, the white tailed deer was the prey of the carnivorous animals. Today the primary predator of the white tailed deer is human beings as there are not a great number of predatory animals in much of the nation (Desert USA, 2007). Their diet consists of vegetation but they will generally eat a great deal of things available: "They often enter human inhabited areas and feast on flowers and grass as well as regularly getting a drink from mans abundant water supplies. Some deer have also taken to eating garbage and plastic which is not at all good for them" (Desert USA, 2007). For the most part they eat twigs, plants, lichen and fungi, as well as fruit and nuts on plants (Desert USA, 2007). They generally live around 10 years in the wild (Desert USA, 2007). It is not until around the second year of life that a male will develop his antlers and become ready for mating (Desert USA, 2007).
