privilege, and white identity in the context of affirmative action; and how they are related. Discussion We begin by summarizing an article by Peggy McIntosh in which she talks about
white privilege. White privilege can be described as the fact that whites hold a privileged position in society by virtue of their race, and for no other reason whatsoever. Theyre
not smarter, funnier, better looking, kinder, better or more driven than blacks, theyre just white, and that in itself puts them at the top of the heap. McIntosh puts it
much more elegantly, but thats the gist of it. The problem arises because whites, by and large, are unaware of the fact that they are privileged, while blacks face daily
reminders that they are not. McIntosh says that as she works to bring womens studies materials into the remainder of the curriculum, she notes "mens unwillingness to grant that
they are overprivileged, even though they may grant that women are disadvantaged. They may say they will work to womens statues, in the society, the university, or the curriculum, but
they cant or wont support the idea of lessening mens" (McIntosh, 1988). She says that men deny the fact that they gain from womens disadvantages so vigorously that any discussion
of the phenomenon has taken on the aspect of a social taboo (McIntosh, 1988). "These denials protect male privilege from being fully acknowledged, lessened, or ended" (McIntosh, 1988). McIntosh reflects
that since "hierarchies in our society are interlocking," there is probably a similar pattern of denial and protection that keeps a white hierarchy in place over blacks in the same
