Black Like Me where an author changes his appearance in order to live in the world as a black person. In that work, Griffins observations are stunning and really gets
to the heart of racism. I assume that a perspective from a white person who does not masquerade as an African American would be helpful as well. I believe I
will enjoy the book because I like to read about social issues. The first chapter of the book is entitled "Born to Belonging." The chapter begins with a James
Baldwin quote about what it means to be a white man in society today (Wise, 2007). Wise (2007) starts of the chapter with reflections on his upbringing and the year
that he was born, 1968. He mentions the book Black Like Me in this first chapter as well (Wise, 2007). He ends by noting that the past is haunting (Wise,
2007). In portions of the chapter he notices that race is a significant issue in society (Wise, 2007). This chapter sets the tone for the rest of the work. I
do believe that race is an issue in society today, but particularly in my line of work. Corrections deals with racism or charges of racism on a daily basis. Understanding
how race figures in society will be helpful for me as I continue my career path as a corrections officer. The section entitled "Privilege" begins by addressing the subject
of guilt and how it is unnecessary and negative (Wise, 2007). The author criticizes multiculturalism and claims that the largest problem in society is equated with teachers who actually reinforce
racism (Wise, 2007). An example is that they punish minorities disproportionately (Wise, 2007). While the author may have a point in regard to his own experience, the case that many
